The High One Who Dwells With the Lowly

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,
who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly,
and to revive the heart of the contrite.” (Isaiah 57:15)

Is there any other single verse in Scripture that so beautifully expresses and balances the transcendence of God and the immanence of God?

  1. Great reflection. Here are some other passages that capture those two themes beautifully:

Matthew 6:9 – Our father (immanence) in heaven (transcendence)

    Psalm 19 – v. 1-6 (Elohim=transcendence); v. 7-14 (Yahweh=immanence)

Genesis 2-3 – Name used for God is “Yahweh-Elohim” (immanence-transcendence)

Psalm 139 strikes the same chord. Great passages all.

  3. Of course, Philippians 2:5-8, John 1:4 equally show the divine and the mundane intersection.
